I'm recognizing that inside me beats the heart of a hero. I have a deep desire to make a difference, to enact change one person at a time. And that I truly believe that theatre has the power to do this by connecting us to our shared humanity.
Am I the only person who feels this way?

I've been intensely fortunate to that kind of change in teenagers.
It's one of the few groups that can be completely changed inside a play and also outside - actors who are of one mind when they start rehearsal and bloom by opening night. Teenagers who read a monologue or sit in the audience and realize they're not alone. That they're not the only one who feels a certain way. That there are words. That they can carry on.
I've seen teenagers completely change their mind on an issue simply by writing a play about it. A play for heaven's sake!
It's pretty humbling and makes me proud beyond belief to be a Theatre for Youth writer. It's a place where I feel I have an affect. I'll never give it up.
